Virginia Wesleyan University announced it will officially change its name to Batten University to honor benefactor Jane Batten and her family, a decision made unanimously by the Board of Trustees and supported by the Methodist Church. President Dr. Scott Miller defended the move, saying discussions have been ongoing since 2007, though many alumni argue they were excluded and blindsided, with over 4,500 signing a petition opposing the change. Alumna Devin Cowhey criticized the lack of transparency and is helping organize a protest, while Miller insisted the decision is final and “there will be no changing that,” despite alumni pledging to continue voicing their opposition.
